Delphinium Care

No time to design?

Chop and drop! Start by removing any foliage that will fall below the water line in the vase. Next, gently grasp all the stems in your hands and measure them against the side of your vessel. Using a sharp pair of scissors, shears or even a kitchen knife, give your stems a quick trim to your desired height. Brownie points? Make the cut at an angle. This maximizes the surface area through which the stem can absorb water. Drop your stems into the vase and you’re done!

Pro Tip: even if you’re totally happy with the height of your flowers out of the box you’ll need to cut at least a half inch from the bottom. A fresh cut helps the stems take a big, fresh drink of water and rehydrate after their overnight road trip to you!

Got a second?

Get arranging! If you want a more designed look we’re here to help too! Start by cleaning your stems of any foliage that will fall below the water line in the vase. Next, gently grasp your delphinium in a bundle in your hand. Pretending like your hand is the vase, work to stagger the heights of each bloom. We like a highest, lowest, high pattern here. Give the stems on the left a little extra height than the rest. Create a “valley” with the shorties in the center and then add with a bit of drama with a little more height on the right.

Last, fan the heads out in all directions so your vase is gorgeous from any angle! Once you’re satisfied with the height and overall feel of your delphinium measure the stems against the height of the vase. This will help you to determine where you’ll need to make your cut. Next, grab a pair of sharp scissors or shears and trim the stems to your desired height. Brownie points for an angled cut! Place your stems in the vessel and enjoy!

Routine Maintenance!

To help your blooms live their best life keep them out of direct sunlight or any extra toasty areas in your home. We recommend placing your vase at least three feet from any sunny window and away from any obvious heat sources (like a radiator). Bacteria build up is natural (and unavoidable) as the stems age. Change the water daily (or as often as you can remember) so your delphinium are always getting a fresh drink! Trimming the stems at the same time will also ensure they’re hydrating efficiently.

Pro Tip: some blooms may die off sooner than others. Removing any dead flowers will help to keep its vase mates looking fresher longer!
